Conditions for submitting an abstract

Submission, Deadline

  • Abstracts have to be submitted exclusively online.
  • Deadline for application is 1 October 2017 23:59:59 CEST.
  • Posters are equally submitted as abstracts, related to the respective topics.
  • Alterations and corrections may be executed previous to the deadline.
  • Abstracts will not be accepted after the deadline, neither by e-mail nor any other means of written communication.
  • Notifications about acceptance or refusal will be sent out during January 2018.

Topic, Language

  • Each contribution must relate to one of the given topics (topics).
  • The language of submission and presentation is English.

Size, Content

  • The abstract is limited to 3,000 characters (approx. 400 words).
  • The title should be short and significant. The text must be orthographically suitable for publishing.
  • The following structure of the abstract is mandatory: Objectives, methods, results and conclusions.
  • The abstract must be text only, no images, graphics or tables.
  • Concerning the methods it has to be clear if the study is prospective or retrospective. Statistical procedures have to be specified.
  • The setup of experimental studies has to be documented.
  • The abstract has to contain all relevant data and figures. Abbreviations must be defined at first usage.
  • The usage of special formatting should be limited. The correct replication in all media cannot be guaranteed.
  • It is not allowed to submit an abstract several times to different topics of the congress.
  • The number of papers submitted by the same author is limited to 10.
  • The number of authors per abstract is limited to 8. The presenter must be listed first.

Conditions, Requirements

  • It is prohibited to include any company or product names in the abstract title, abstract text or keywords. Non-observance automatically results in the refusal of the abstract. A re-submission is not possible.
  • The presenter is responsible for the compliance with data protection, copyrights, ethic regulations and laws on animal protection.
  • To assure the anonymous review it is not allowed to mention any names or locations in the paper.
  • Results that have already been published or lectured elsewhere cannot be submitted.
  • Accepted papers will be published for quotation on CD-ROM/USB flash drive according to the principles of Open Access.
  • Authors’ fees or royalties cannot be claimed.
  • All listed authors have to consent to the abstract text as well as to their publication in all congress media.
  • Conflicts of interest through commercial benefits have to be disclosed.

Review, Registration

  • All submitted abstracts will be reviewed anonymously by three experts.
  • Evaluation criteria are: Hypothesis, relevance, material and methodology, results and conclusions.
  • Abstracts that show formal errors (multi-submission, not anonymised, already published) will be rejected.
  • Email notifications about acceptance or refusal will be sent to the presenting author subsequent to the reviewing process.

Awards

  • Theo van Rens Best Paper Award: The 6 papers with the highest score from the review process will compete in the Star Paper Session for this Award. A jury will select the best paper out of the 6 finalists directly after the session. The Award money is 3,000 EUR.
  • Best Poster Awards: The 10 posters with the highest score in each topic will compete for the Awards. There will be 10 Awards with 250 EUR each. The 10 categories are: Ankle, Knee Degenerative, Knee ACL, Knee meniscus, Knee PCL/MCL/LCL, Hip/Groin, Muscle/Tendon, Shoulder, Elbow/wrist, Cartilage, Basic science. The rating is based on the score of the review process and the graphical design. The winners will be selected on-site by the “Best Poster Jury” and announced at the Congress.
  • Basic Scientist Travel Grants: ESSKA provides financial support for four selected basic scientists enabling them to attend the 18th ESSKA Congress. Selection will be made by a jury based on the excellence of the basic science abstracts. The presenting author, who needs to be an ESSKA member (or will become an ESSKA member), will receive up to EUR 500 to cover travel costs to attend the Congress.
